Hey Gen Z; Sharpen Your Saw:
What Generation Z Needs to Know to Impress and Influence those in the Workforce
We all know that ones’ actions leave a lasting impression on other people. How we think, speak, act, behave, even wear our clothes can have an impact on those around us. It’s very important to leave good impressions on all of those we encounter in our daily lives. But we shouldn’t only leave good impressions on strangers, friends, or family, but also those in the workplace, especially our bosses and co-workers. By keeping this simple truth top of mind, you will put yourself in a much better position to grow within your company, business or organization.
Respect. First, your boss wants you to be respectful; to show your admiration for not only her, but your job, your colleagues, customers, and especially, yourself. You show respect by being engaged in your work, and by showing that you desire to work at that job. You show respect by not diminishing or trivializing something; by carrying out the actions from your boss. You show respect by caring about your job and yourself. Always do quality work and give your best efforts. You are always being observed and evaluated.
Discipline. Jocko Willink, motivational speaker, author, former navy SEAL officer, says that discipline starts with waking up early, but that would only be the beginning. In an interview, Willink states:
“I always say that discipline is the root of all good qualities, but you have to absolutely apply it to things outside of just waking up early. It’s everything. It’s working out every day and making yourself stronger and faster and more flexible and healthier. Discipline is eating the right foods to fuel your system. It’s about disciplining your emotions, so you can make good decisions. It’s about having the disciplines to control your ego, so your ego doesn’t get out of hand and control you. It’s about treating people the way you want to be treated and doing the tasks you don’t necessarily want to do, but that you know will help you or help your team. It’s about facing your fears (it takes discipline to face your fears, so you can conquer them).”
This excerpt is so important so that you know how to maintain discipline and show that you care. Your boss is someone who wants to know if his employees can train themselves, go the extra mile and take pride in what they do. Discipline is what any good leader of people in a corporation wants from their employees and discipline is a habit we need to practice every single day.
Being Adaptable. Adaptability is an acquired skill that we should all practice. Throughout our lives, things will change against our will and we should have the ability to find a sort of acceptance and fortitude within the environment we live and work in. Your boss is the one who decides what happens within the workplace. It is ok for you to provide respectful opinions and feedback, but when a decision is made and change is imminent, be adaptable and you will find yourself in a much better position long term.
Show That You’re More Than an Employee. One of the most important elements to standing out in the workplace is taking on more responsibility and exhibiting leadership skills. Being an employee is important, and you should be the best employee that you can be, but it is also very important to show that you’re able to lead other employees and colleagues within your work place. Help the people in need, give positive and inspiring directions, make people comfortable. Learn how to be a better boss than the one you have now, and you won’t just impress your boss but your co-workers and employees as well.
