Instill these 3 habits into your elementary age children

As parents and educators, we spend a lot of time focused on helping our children maximize their potential. It is well documented that habits develop at an early age. In fact, according to a study conducted by Psychology Today, habits take root in children by age 9. This means that your average 4th grader has already learned and developed habits that will become a part of their everyday life as they grow to be teens and into adulthood.

Given this reality and all of the competing influences making demands on adults and our children, we believe it is important to outline simple steps that educators and parents can take to help their children develop healthy habits at a young age.

Putting the Time In!

There’s never a short cut when it comes to succeeding in education, in careers, or in life! Parents must instill in their children the importance of time commitment and exercising patience when striving to accomplish their goals. It’s a good idea to teach kids at an early age, to write down objectives, clearly outlining what want to accomplish in whatever they plan to do. This best practice applies to homework, sports, games, personal growth, etc.

Focus On Competing with Yourself, Not Others.

In sports and other competitive endeavors, you will always have someone who wins and someone who loses. It is important to teach your children to compete hard but with an eye on giving 100% of their own effort, regardless of the outcome. This means accepting victory graciously and accepting defeat as a learning experience. Through this approach we know that children will have a healthier outcome and a better and more positive outlook on competition and its importance in their teen and adult years.

We want our children to ask themselves (whether in team sports, or individual accomplishments)—did I give my best? What did I learn through my journey? What could I have done better?

At BIZNOVATOR we teach our students and their parents, that in life there are winners and their learners.

Develop A Thirst for Knowledge and Be Curious

It is imperative at a young age that our children develop a strong sense of curiosity and learn to question everything. Growing up, my parents always told me that there are no dumb questions. I thank them for that guidance as it helped me to develop a desire to learn and grow even as I have reached my adult years.

As parents and educators, we should guide our children towards resources that can provide them a positive experience towards learning. Explore areas of interest with your children and help them identify books, websites, apps, etc where they can learn and expand their knowledge. You will be amazed at what your children are capable of. A strong sense of curiosity leads to a wealth of knowledge.
